Dubrovnik Walls and Lockrum Island

Up and away before the crowds got too big and before the sun got too hot so we could walk the city walls.  It’s apparently about 2 kilometres but most of it is either up stairs or down stairs all the way around, and of course there are little diversion to a few turrets.  It took us a couple of hours.  We then got the boat over to Lokrum Island.  It’s an island a couple of hundred metres off the coast and had a monastery, fort and a ‘castle’ on it.  Most are ruins now.  We got over there about 11am and did the longest walk up to the fort.  The path is called the ‘Path of Paradise’.  Pam thinks it should be renamed the road to hell.  It was hot, rocky, steep and long.  We were quite exhausted by the time we got back to sea level so decided to have a swim.  It’s very cold but so refreshing after our hot morning.  Got back to Dubrovnik at about 3pm and had a late lunch, an ice cream and made some plans for tomorrow.  Walked our four thousand steps back up to our unit, bought some supplies at our shop and arrived home exhausted at about 6pm.  Ready for a BIG sleep.

View from our room this morning - old town to the right, Lokrum Island to the left.

Boats in the clear water of the harbour

Lets walk the City Walls she said.........

Are we there yet?

Cafe on the way, no room for chairs you have to sit on the steps.  We declined - we had a long way to go.

Happy campers at one of the high points.

Looking down along the wall walk, and at a basketball court a little short of room.

Obligatory selfie.

The main street - a bit too early for the tourists yet.  Later in the day you can hardly walk through here.

The turret where we did the selfie

Walls against the sea.

Almost locked up.

Our Island boat
leaving Dubrovnik for Lockrum Island.

One of our objectives - the fort.

Bit of false advertising going on here?

Not even close to paradise.

Tough going

Views from the fort to Dubrovnik and Mount Srd.

Inside the fort

Now it's time to go down - not an easy task either.

Not just 'No smoking'.....'no PIPE smoking'!!!!

The olive grove

Vernon in the swim

Cooled off

This is where we swam.

One of the hundreds of peacocks on the island strutting his stuff.

Leaving the dock of the island to return to Dubrovnik.

In we come.
Back in town - see if this is the Path of Paradise?

Just one of the altars in one of the churches in town, no paradise here.

The south gate to the old town.
